The goal of this project was to create a word from ink marks of our own creation, and use the characteristic of the mark to add character/depth/meaning/tone to the word of our choice.
The first step was to create the marks. I made my marks by dipping a foam dice, a foam football, a rubber toy and a shoestring in ink, and then pressing it into paper.
After the marks were made, I isolated ten of my favorite marks and brainstormed concepts for them. These 'concepts' were words that I might transform the mark into.
The next step was to isolate our favorite marks and concepts and sketch them down. I chose the marks above that are highlighted in green. Initially, the concepts I chose to move forward with were 'Adorn' and 'Ethereal'. For the first mark, I played with multiple concepts and eventually settled for the concept 'Midnight'.
I began to work on my 'Midnight' concept first. These marks were edited in photoshop. I decided to inverse the image, so that the ink mark was white and the background was black. After some experimenting, I created an extremely interesting shape. I layered it and messed with it for awhile, and also, I made the letters from the same ink mark.
After a lot of changes and experiments, this is the final product for 'Midnight':
My next concept was initially intended to be 'Ethereal', but I ended up changing it to 'Echo' midway through. This mark went through much more experimentation than the previous one before I was satisfied.
Finally, I ended up with this final product:
That concludes this project. I found this project to be challenging in an extremely positive way--I got more experience in photoshop and got to really dig deep in exploring concepts! I'm really happy with my final product.
